Management styles can vary widely, from authoritative and top-down to collaborative and empathetic. However, the most impactful business leaders cultivate a management style marked by wisdom and discernment. What does it look like to lead with godly wisdom and discernment?
Proverbs tells us that “wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7). As Christian businesswomen, it’s crucial we seek wisdom from God and develop discernment in how we lead teams.
Here’s how to grow in wisdom and discernment as a leader:
1. Depend on Prayer
James 1:5 instructs, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Begin in prayer whenever facing major decisions or leadership challenges. Ask God for His wisdom to guide and discern the right course of action. Allow Him to shape your heart and mindset as a leader.
2. Cultivate Humility
“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2). The wisest leaders remain humble and teachable. Admit what you don’t know. Be willing to listen, receive feedback, and improve. Don’t let ego or defensiveness hinder your leadership. Humility paves the way for greater wisdom from God.
3. Surround Yourself with Counselors
“For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers” (Proverbs 11:14). Every leader needs trusted advisors who can offer sound counsel and rebuke if needed. Don’t isolate yourself. Build a team of wise, discerning professionals and mentors. Seek their input proactively.
4. Listen Before Judging
“The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him” (Proverbs 18:17). Wise leaders listen and understand issues fully before responding. Avoid reactionary or subjective judgments. Patient listening reveals deeper insights and perspectives beyond your own.
5. Think Long-Term
A wise leader considers long-term implications, not just quick solutions. How will this decision impact the health of the team in years to come? What sustainable growth pattern do we need to set? Have patience in developing your team.
6. Walk with Integrity
Wisdom calls us to live and lead with integrity. “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out” (Proverbs 10:9). Stay true to your values and what you know is right. Uphold ethical standards. Character speaks volumes.
While seeking God’s wisdom and discernment takes humility and intention, doing so allows you to become the kind of leader He desires – one marked by abiding faith, courage, justice, compassion, and honor. As Proverbs 16:3 promises, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” May you lead wisely.
